Basic Information of Pack 512

Cub Scout Pack 512 is a large group of young Scouts who mostly live in Northwest Reno, Verdi, and Mogul. We certainly accept Scouts from other areas if we fit your needs. Our main recruitment coincides with the beginning of the School year in August but we accept boys year-round. Boys in Kindergarten through Fifth grade may join Cub Scouting. Their "rank" is based on their age and grade in school: Kindergarten = Lions; First grade=Tigers; Second grade=Wolves; Third grade=Bears; Fourth and Fifth grade=Webelos. If they are older, they belong in Boy Scouts. Please contact us for a refferal to local Boy Scout Troops.

Cub Scouts meet in "Dens" of 6 to 10 boys approximately twice a month to weekly. These Den Meetings may be at the Den Leader's house, at the library, or other location determined by the Den Leader. Once a month all Dens and Scout families meet for a "Pack Meeting". This meeting is usually at Westergard Elementary School, but may be at other locations to suit the activity that month. Parents are required to attend all Scout functions of Tiger Cubs. Parents and families are encouraged to attend the monthly Pack Meetings. These festive events are where Scouts earn their awards, get their faces painted, put on skits and practice flag ceremonies.

The cost of joining Pack 512 is $55.00 per year without Boy's Life Magazine and $69.00 with a subscription. $33.00 of this fee goes to Boy Scouts of America and the rest supports Pack Activities. The Pack pays for the Boy's awards, which usually cost around $1,800.00 per year for the Pack. We further fund these programs with Popcorn Sales, a one time per year fundraiser that Scouts are encouraged to participate in during September and October. The Scouts not only help fund the Boy Scouts of America, but enhance Pack funding and actually earn their own money toward camps and credit at the Scout Store!!

There is also the necessity of purchasing the Scout uniform and book for your Scout. These items will set you back around $60.00 at the Scout Store. The store is located at 500 Double Eagle Court in Reno.

Here are some of the events we have scheduled for this year:

Pinewood Derby, Crossover (advancement) Picnic, Blue and Gold Banquet (celebration of Scouting's Anniversary), Pack Campout, Cub Scout Day Camp, and Resident Camp. Every year offers new events and opportunities for boys to grow and have fun!! There are many other fun activities that will occur.

Our Pack is run by a dedicated group of Leaders and our Chartered Organization is Nevada Scouters. The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide an educational program for boys and young adults to build desirable qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and to develop personal fitness (from the Cub Scout Leader Book). Our desire is for all Cub Scouts of Pack 512 to graduate to Boy Scouts and become productive and effective Leaders of our community.

We also offer the opportunity for boys to advance in their faith life and have had many boys complete the Religious Emblems program. See the handout below.
