Venturing

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Venturing?
Venturing is a youth development program of the Boy Scouts of America for young men and women who are 14 years of age OR 13 years of age and have completed the eighth grade and under 21 years of age. Venturing's purpose is to provide positive experiences to help young people mature and to prepare them to become responsible and caring adults through living by the Scout Oath & Law.

Why Should I Join Venturing?

Venturing provides youth with the opportunity to have fun and try new things while gaining valuable leadership skills.

What Leadership Roles Are Available?

  • President - Leads Crew
  • Vice President of Administration - Manages Crew affairs
  • Vice President of Programs - Manages Crew Events
  • Vice President of Communications- Records Minutes and attendance
  • Quartermaster - Manages Crew Gear

Is There a Uniform?

Crew 68 - like all Venture Crews - chooses its own uniform consisting of the Crew 68 t-shirt. For official events, the official Venturing uniform (green uniform shirt with patches and gray pants) is worn.

What are the Methods of Venturing?

  • Group Activities - Group experiences in which success is dependent on the cooperation of all; Learning in a group setting provides opportunities for developing new skills
  • Adult Association - The youth Officers lead the Crew; Officers and Event Organizers work closely with adult Advisors and other adult leaders in a spirit of partnership; The adults serve in a "shadow" leader capacity
  • High Adventure - Venturing's emphasis on high adventure helps provide team-building opportunities, new meaningful experiences, practical leadership application, and lifelong memories to young adults; All of the Boy Scouts of America's resources are available to Venturers, including canoeing in Minnesota, Backpacking in New Mexico, sailing/SCUBA/diving/water sports in Key West Florida, and white water rafting/National Jamborees in West Virginia
  • Events - Almost anything the Crew can think of can be done as a Crew Event including shooting sports (archery, rifles, shotguns, black powder, and pistols), camping, snow skiing, fishing, horseback riding, parties, dancing, photography, sports, rock climbing, and everything High Adventure
  • Teaching Others - All of the Venturing awards require Venturers to teach what they have learned to others; When they teach others often, Venturers are better able to retain the skill or knowledge they taught, they gain confidence in their ability to speak and relate to others, and they acquire new skills that can benefit them for the rest of their lives as a hobby or occupation

How Do The Youth Lead?

The youth elect their youth leadership, choose what and when to do events, decide when to meet, and how to run their program.
