Welcome to Pack 311

I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to Cub Scout Pack 311. We are looking forward to a fun, exciting and educational year. We have a lot of wonderful family events planned for the boys and their adult partners. To help you prepare for the 2017-2018 scouting year in Pack 311 we have put together some points of interest that should help explain some of the terminology, events, and expectations that have come to be part of Cub Scouts.  Please also look for our weekly email communications in your inbox to stay apprised of everything going on within Pack 311.

Den and Pack Meetings

Pack 311 meets weekly on Monday evenings from 6:30 - 7:30 PM at Mountain Range High School cafeteria (while STEM is under construction), located at 12500 Huron St, Westminster CO 80234.  Typically,we strive for three den meetings per month and one pack meeting or event. We follow the Adams 12 calendar when scheduling activities.  If the school is closed due to a holiday or inclement weather, there will be no meeting.  We also have some Saturday activities on the schedule so that we can make up for some of those school closures.  Upon the start of each meeting we will conduct our flag ceremony led by one of the dens, announcements will be made and then we will break into groups or begin our event.  We finish each meeting with the closing flag ceremonies, after which scouts are dismissed.

Pack Registration & Dues

Each parent must complete a registration for their scout and pay the annual dues at that time.  We will have a table set up for this purpose at the annual Pool Party & Join Night.  Once you have paid and registered, you will receive your welcome packet and Class B t-shirt (if you are a new scout, returning scouts will not receive a new t-shirt). The pack and the district council also strongly encourage each family to have at least one registered adult along with their son.  This allows us to maintain the utmost safety of the boys at all times.  Tiger scouts are required by the BSA to have one registered parent.

Pack dues are estimated at $75 for the 2017-2018 scouting year with an optional $12 subscription fee to Boy’s Life magazine. These dues cover your scout’s registration as well as pack and den activities, a Class B t-shirt (for new members only), adventure loops (formerly belt loops, badges, pins), neckerchiefs and sliders upon rank advancement, trophies, and medals that each child achieves throughout the year. These fees also go towards Pack 311’s charter fees, the boy’s insurance through Boy Scouts of America, bank fees, as well as various administrative supplies (copies, office supplies, etc.).We review the budget each year prior to the start of the meetings. These fees are able to remain low each year due to our fundraising with popcorn and camp card sales.

Cub Scout Uniform

Pack 311 does not require a full head to toe Cub Scout uniform. A minimum Class A uniform would be comprised of a rank appropriate Cub Scout or Webelos shirt with all required patches (World Crest, Unit Numerals 311, and Denver Area Council patch), a rank appropriate neckerchief, and rank appropriate neckerchief glide. Items such as a Cub Scout hat, belt, or pants are optional and not required.

Class A Uniforms are expected to be worn properly and with pride. Uniforms are expected to be tucked in with a pair of navy, khaki,or denim shorts or pants and covered toe footwear (no sandals or Crocs) to all Pack sponsored events.  If your den is in charge of the weekly flag ceremony, a Class A uniform is required (no exceptions).

With your scout's paid registration, he will receive a pack Class B t-shirt (for new scouts only). This can be worn in place of the Class A uniform during certain meetings and events as specified by our weekly email communication (usually when we are doing messier activities).

Handbook

A rank appropriate handbook will be essential for the boys to fulfill their full potential as Cub Scouts. For the boys to make rank advancements they will need to complete the requirements in their books and have each achievement signed off by their Den Leader.  The Den Leader will then report advancement milestones to the Pack Leader and achievement awards will be handed out during a scheduled pack meeting. Handbook prices range from $13.00 to $19.00 depending on type of binding you choose.

Fundraising

As a pack we fundraise each year by selling popcornthrough Trails End.  We do requireeach family to participate. Trails End allows us to keep 30-38% of thepopcorn sales within the pack. The money raised by the popcorn sales are usedto offset the pack dues and allows Pack 311 to provide a more enriching scoutingprogram for the boys.  Part of your son's commission will be put into anindividual account to help pay for their summer camp and registration fees, andpart of the proceeds are used to help the pack pay for all of our events andactivities such as the annual pool party, Space Derby, Raingutter Regatta,Pinewood Derby and Rocket Launch to list a few.  Trails End allows us todo online sales through their website. We also provide scouts with severalprearranged opportunities to sign up for show and sells at local grocery storesand businesses to help boost their sales.  We also try to make it as funas possible by offering contests and prizes for the boys.

We do offer a second fundraising activity in the springselling camp cards which are designed to help your scout pay for their campingexperience.  These are a very easy fundraiser and a great way to add moneyto your scout’s account.  The cards themselves sell for $5 each and are areusable discount/coupon card with businesses like Bass Pro Shop, Old Chicagoand Sports Clips participating each year.

Volunteering

The Cub Scouting program is run solely on a volunteer basis.Every person on our committee and in a leadership role is a parent volunteer.  Nothing would be possible without our volunteers.  Because of this, we do ask that every family commit to helping with at least one job or event throughout the course of the year.If you had a knack for something or have an interest in a certain field,it can be applied to scouting!  Please let us know what area interests you most and we will try to find the right job for you.  We have committee roles, leadership roles, and just plain helpful roles.  Many hands truly do make for light work.  If you are interested in becoming a leader or committee member, we encourage you to attend one of our monthly committee meetings.

Bobcat Ceremony

Our annual Bobcat ceremony is to honor our newest members.  Every Cub Scout, upon entering the program, must complete the Bobcat requirements as their first official order of business.  During the ceremony, we will ask for the new scouts to come up with their parent or guardian to be recognized.

Here are the requirements for Bobcat for the 2017-2018 Program year:

1. Learn and say the Scout Oath, with help if needed.
2. Learn and say the Scout Law, with help if needed.
3. Show the Cub Scout sign. Tell what it means.
4. Show the Cub Scout handshake. Tell what it means.
5. Say the Cub Scout motto. Tell what it means.
6. Show the Cub Scout salute. Tell what it means.
7. With your parent or guardian, complete the exercises in the pamphlet How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide—Bobcat Requirements.

Pinewood Derby

Pinewood Derby is probably our largest event of the year. We will supply each scout with a kit to build their own Pinewood Derby racing car.  Kits obtained outside of the pack will not qualify to be raced.  We will have extras that can be purchased for siblings and outlaws.  It is not a mandatory event, however it is extremely fun and of course like any good race, there are trophies and medals to be won!

Blue and Gold

Our annual Blue and Gold banquet serves several purposes. Blue and Gold has become synonymous with celebrating the birthday of Scouting, but it also signifies the point in which a Webelos II scout crosses out of Cub Scouts and into Boy Scouts. This is a big achievement in a Scout’s journey and we recognize it as such. The Blue and Gold Banquet is a celebration that we hold in honor of the Scout’s achievements and in honor of Scouting itself.  This event is held in February of each year and it is important for every scout to attend to see what they are able to achieve through the Cub Scouting program.

Camp

Camping at the Cub Scout level is a family event. As Cub Scouts, the boys are not allowed to camp without parent or guardian. Pack 311 camps once a year as a pack through Magness Adveture Camp in Elbert, CO.  This is a district approved site. You may find more information via the campground web site at http://www.denverboyscouts.org/camping/cub-scouts/magness-adventure-camp/11112. In all Cub Scout camping events, each camper is responsible for bring all of their own camping supplies and food unless otherwise specified in advance by the campout organizer.

There is also a day camp opportunity available over the summer for those who are not able to attend Camp Magness.  It is held at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal for the Valley District.  Here is the website for more info (it has not been updated for next summer as of yet):  http://www.denverboyscouts.org/camping/cub-scouts/day-camp/11056.
