North Fork Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby

The Pinewood Derby is one of Cub Scouting’s most memorable events.  Scouts learn a lot by building their cars and have great fun, plus competing at the Derby.
Cars can win awards for appearance as well as speed, so Scouts go home with prizes as well as fond memories.

The Pinewood Derby is a Parent/Son event.  Each Scout should be involved to the greatest extent possible in the design, shaping, sanding, painting and /or
decorating of the car.  The parent should be there to help the scout to create his car, rather than doing everything for the scout.

Rules and Car specifications on the sheet that comes with your Pinewood Derby kit shall be followed.  Additionally:

1.      The official race scale shall be considered final.

2.      Official size BSA wheels must be used regardless of manufacture.  Colored wheels are permitted as long as they are the official sizes and stamped with the BSA logo/Wording.

3.      The axles supplied with the kit must be used unless you purchased a different Pinewood Derby car kit that is official size per BSA guidelines, and then must be  used.  They may be polished or lubricated.  Only dry lubrication is permitted.

4.      Wheel bearings, washers or bushings are prohibited.

5.      The car must not ride one any type of springs.

6.      The car must be freewheeling, without any starting devices.

7.      No loose material of any kind, such as lead shot, may be used.  All weight must fit tight and /or glued in place. Car weight can not exceed 5 ounces.  It is recommended that you get as close to 5 ounces as possible without going over.  This will make the car faster

8.      Glass and excessively fragile parts may not be used.

9.      The car body may have no moving parts.

10.  If a car leaves its lane, without interfering with its opponents, it shall be considered to have ended its heat at that point.  However, the race committee may order the heat reran if a flaw is found on or with the track that could have caused the violation.

11.  Each Car must pass inspection by the official inspection committee before it is allowed to compete.  The inspection Committee has the responsibility to disqualify those cars that do not meet the specifications.

12.  Once a car passes inspection and entered into the race, only the race committee members can touch it.  However, if the car loses a wheel, or it is otherwise damaged, the race committee may allow the racer to make repairs.

13.  If the brain sensor indicates there is a tie, the heat shall be rerun.

Registration is $5.

The Derby will be held at High Water Church on Dutch lane just off Rt. 661 heading towards Johnstown.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Cars being run in the Scout classes may not be run in the Outlaw class.   No powered vehicle (Motor, electric, wind, CO2, battery powered, rubber band, or any other type of powered vehicle) can be run in the Scout class.

For the Outlaw race:  2 Pound weight limit must use only one lane, must fit under the lane brain, registration $5 per car.  Race is for anyone that pays the $5 registration fee. (Parents, siblings etc.)  Only a First place trophy will be awarded for this class.  It is a win or go home bracket only the 1st place winner from each heat/race will advance! ( Cars in the Outlaw class can be powered by a mechanical device but no CO2 devices due to cars flying off the track)
