Pinewood Derby Rules:

Bring out the saws, its Pinewood Derby time again! This is a chance for the Scouts to create a great race car and win in either the show category or the speed category. Parents, it’s important to read and understand these rules to prevent disappointment and disqualification on race day.

Here are the Official Rules for Pinewood Derby, in addition to those included in the box.

• Cars MUST be built from BSA “Official Grand Prix Pinewood Derby Car Kits”. NO HOBBIE SHOP CAR ALLOWED.

• Width of the car shall not exceed 2 3/4 inches

• Width between wheels shall not be less than 1 3/4 inches

• Ground clearance from lowest point of car to track shall be at least 3/8 inch

• Weight of car shall not exceed 5 ounces ( by Race Officials’ Scale )

• Length of car shall not exceed 7 inches

• The axles (nails) must be located in the grooves provided in the original kit

• The axles (nails) must be visible on the bottom of the car ( i.e. no paint or opaque glue covering them)

• All parts must be secured

• No reworked cars allowed

• Only powdered graphite shall be used to lubricate axles. No silicon lubricant is allowed.

• No springs; no re-drilling of hubs; wheels-tire tread must remain visible; no bearings; no washers; no hub caps

• All cars must have all four wheels

• The Race Official Judges decision is final.

• The judges may inspect all winning cars by removing a wheel to insure compliance with the rules

• Construction of the cars must be performed as follows

  • Lion/Tiger: A parent/boy project. Significant assistance from a parent is expected where safety is an issue, such as cutting, drilling, etc. Finish work such as sanding, painting, decals, etc is to be done by scout.
  • Wolf/Bear: More of a boy project than for Tigers: Most cutting, drilling, etc done by the scout (with supervision. All finish work done by the scout.
  • Webelos/AOL: Virtually a boy-only project with the exception of large power tools (i.e. table saws, band saws, etc.) There should be virtually no adult assistance in the physical building of these cars. Verbal support is highly encouraged.
